Free MP3 Download: John Mellencamp's "Longest Days"
On the song “Chinese Translation,” from his 2007 album, Post-War, Portland’s M. Ward posed a young man’s question: “If life is really as short as they say, then why is the night so long?”
The sadder but wiser man’s response comes in “Longest Days,” a spellbinding track from John Mellencamp’s upcoming album, Life, Death, Love and Freedom: “Sometimes you’re sick and don’t get better. That’s when life is short even on its longest days.”
The album, which comes out on July 15, was produced by T. Bone Burnett and recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles. Mellencamp, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, wrote all the songs, and he calls this one “a pensive and poignant song about the fact that life is precious, yet ephemeral.”

I have been dying for months for you all to hear this song, this is easily my favorite on the album. I personally think it's one of the best songs John has ever written.
John and his team have been working on placing this song with Vanity Fair for a few months, it's being offered as part of their Digital Issue. The subscriber issue is going to have a Mellencamp ad in it too.

This song is amazing! One thing is certain, if the rest of the record is any indication of this song and "My Sweet Love" we aren't going to be listening to this CD to be-bop in the car, house, or wherever, but to listen to it with reflection of what was, is, and will be "in our lives".
I cannot WAIT to hear the rest of this record. I tend to believe the record executives that said this was a "f*cking masterpiece* (JM quote) finally got it right!

I have listened to this song several times this morning and it is one that I hope he dose on tour. So much emotion in it. I am soooo looking forward to what else this CD will include.

He did it once on the fall tour, we have a clip of it on Mellencamp.com's old TOUR page. You could tell that John wasn't feeling it all the way on a cold audience that had never heard it. I too am hoping he pulls it out for the summer tour. It being the lead off track on the album definitely says something about how much John likes it.

i didn't have to register kyra. but i never actually got another page either, it just started playing in media player. make sure your popups are enabled, i did have to do that.

I had heard the clip of him doing this live. I loved it then. It's obvious to me John is looking back on his own life, but at the same time, I can relate it to mine and I'm sure everyone else can also.
My dad isn't doing real well health wise right now and it really makes me think of him or how he might be thinking. It would be a pretty heavy song for him right now.
Mellencamp is an American treasure.
